1 pound meaty beef shanks
2 cans (15 ounces each) kidney beans, rinsed, drained
1 can (14 1⁄2 ounces) stewed tomatoes
1 cup each: sliced carrots, onion, diced turnips, cut green beans
1 each: rib celery, halved onion
1 teaspoon each: dried oregano and thyme leaves
1 bay leaf
Salt and pepper, to taste
